When I paint landscapes, I often don’t know exactly what the finished piece will look like. As I worked on this painting, I found myself puzzled by the shape of the mountains. At one point, I did a quick search and discovered that I had painted the Tianzi Mountains in China—the very same mountains that inspired the floating peaks in the movie Avatar.
It’s moments like these that make the process so amazing—when my brush takes me to unexpected places. ‘Monsoon Sunset Over the Tianzi Mountains’ is one of those times when, in my studio, I’ve traveled not just across the world but into realms of the imagination and beyond.
